When it comes to wearing makeup, some women tend to go overboard. To make matters worse, they often are not aware of the fact that they are wearing too much. This bad habit not only makes for a makeup mishap, it can wreak havoc on their complexion in the long run. If you’re guilty of this common occurrence, there are steps you can take to learn how to lessen your makeup load. Your skin will thank you for it!

We’ve all seen it: the woman that has so much makeup piled on her complexion that it appears like a separate mask. For women that are aware of their dependency on their cosmetics, the first step is to identify how much makeup you are applying and how often. If you happen to be the type of woman that can’t leave the house - even to run simple errands - without layering on the makeup, you’ll find the idea of lessening your load a bit of a challenge at first. However, with time and practice, you’ll eventually learn how to minimize how much foundation, concealer, eye makeup and lip color you wear on a daily basis. Sporting layers of foundation and concealer on a daily basis is not good for your skin so your first lesson will be training yourself to use a light hand when it comes to application. Do not cake on your foundation! This makeup item is only to be used for creating a smooth and uniform skin tone. Use your finger to dab some of the foundation onto your complexion and then smooth it outwards using your fingertips and blend. Check your progress in the mirror with good lighting. One application of foundation should be more than enough. If you think you have too much on, use a makeup sponge or cotton ball and run it over your complexion. This will soak up excess foundation. Apply a few dabs of concealer as needed but don’t overdo it. If you have a hard time changing this part of your routine, try switching to brush-on foundation in powder form (for dry skin types, you’ll need to stick to a cream or liquid formula).

Think about your routine and what makeup you apply. Do you go all out with the foundation, concealer, powder, blush, eye liner, eye shadow, mascara and lip color? Then try taking away one or two of these factors out of the equation with each passing day. For example, try wearing foundation, concealer, powder, blush, eye liner, mascara and lip color but skip out on the eye shadow. Then the next day try only wearing foundation, concealer, blush, mascara and lip color. With each passing day, you should try to eliminate one or more of the makeup items you normally apply to your complexion. Eventually you’ll learn how to create different, lighter makeup looks that will keep your skin happy and still give you the coverage that you feel comfortable with.
