origins_main.jpgOrigins was so inspired by our own Linda Wells's October Editor's Letter, where she called out cosmetics companies for all their wasteful packaging, that they decided to do something about it. Something very big. The nature-loving beauty brand is launching the Return to Origins Recycling Program tomorrow (happy Earth Day, peeps!)—and that means all 130 Origins stores and hundreds of their department-store counters will now be happy to recycle any and all used cosmetic packaging you bring in—from any brand. And they're givin' away free stuff to get you there!

It all starts tomorrow at their kick-off events in LA and NYC, where Linda Wells and Gossip Girl's Kelly Rutherford, along with Jane Lauder of Origins, will be out to rock their support. Just go to the GM Plaza at 5th and 58th at 10AM with your beauty trash—there will be free hand massages and hundreds of skin-care samples, if you're early. (In LA, get your self and your used stuff to Origins at the Century City Mall by 3PM, where 90210's Jessica Stroup is host .)

If you can't make the events, do your part by going to your closest Origins in the month of April—when everyone who brings their beauty trash in will receive a free sample of one of their A Perfect World skin-care products. We just think that's taking generous to a whole other level. Way to do the right thing Origins!

Perfectly set eyes, brows that never need shaping, sculpted cheekbones, pouty lips, a flawless complexion… we wish! Few, if any, of us have them all. But each of us has at least one “best feature”- one beautiful part of our face that gets noticed and complimented. Play to that strength and make the rest of your look come together for a striking appearance that will leave him breathless.

Perfectly set eyes with no bags or dark circles are a dream-come-true. If your eyes are your best feature, capitalize on them by choosing colors that compliment your skin tone. Use three coordinating shades (no more) to highlight and accent. This will add dimension and depth. Use liner and mascara according to your eye colors – lighter tones use brown black, and pair dark liners and black mascara with bold shadows. Use waterproof mascara only if necessary. It dries the lashes. Never rub or stretch your eyes. This causes fine lines and wrinkles and smudges your lovely look.

Full brows that arc beautifully will polish every look from bare skin to a rich, glamorous makeover. Make the most of your best feature with a brow shaping brush and brow powder. To add a touch of shine and keep brows on place while swimming or outdoors, try a brow shaping wax or gel. Don’t forget to groom the outside end of your brows. Long hairs can make a sculpted brow appear unkempt and diminish the overall appearance of your eyes.

Sculpted cheekbones complement all your other facial features. Use a large blush brush to sweep your cheek color along the underside of your cheek bones. Then smile and sweep color from the apples of your cheeks up toward your ears. Be careful not to over-accentuate your contour color. If your cheekbones are naturally sculpted, too much color can make them look gaunt and cast unattractive shadows onto your chin line.

Pouty lips
are even more kissable when they are nourished and moisturized. Even the fullest lips need to be pampered with lip balm after washing your face and as part of your touch-up routine. Make your pout look its best with liner applied from the outside corner to the center of the top lip. Line your bottom lip by tracing the middle and working the outer corners. Add gloss for even more smile appeal.

A flawless complexion is what most of us spend our time and money trying to achieve. If you’ve got it naturally, show it off! Forget the foundation and use a tinted moisturizer to give your other cosmetics staying power. Use nude or earth-toned eye shadows, smoky liner and black mascara. Don’t hide your complexion under a lot of blush. Make your lips stand out with a bold lip color. Your lips are a great complement to your glowing skin.

Dark under eye circles
There are several reasons that cause dark under eye circles: lack of sleep, dehydration, nasal/seasonal allergies and genetics. Dark circles can appear to be worse when these multiple factors are combined. When you are suffering from lack of sleep, dehydration, or seasonal allergies, these are generally temporary and most easily fixed, since they are generally caused by poor circulation around the eyes. Using cold compresses in the morning will help with the darkness caused by lack of sleep. If seasonal allergies are the issue, then using anit-allergy medication will help. If the dark under eye circles are caused by heredity, then the issue is generally darker skin around the eyes. The best way to correct this is by using skin products that can improve the tone and texture of skin. Some examples are products containing Vitamin K or glycolic acids. Make-up and concealer can also be applied under the eye area to cover up. Adding a bit of moisturiser to the make-up or concealer will give a smoother application and will not settle into lines. If the skin is very dark, talk to your dermatologist about brightening creams or injectable fillers.

Dark acne spots
Generally, with Indian skins, after a pimple heals the skin can turn into a brown spot. Left untreated these spots can take months to heal. Often the brown spots look just as bad as the original breakouts. When these spots appear, they can be treated with a topical skin-lightening product. Some skin-lightening agents are available over-the-counter and stronger forms can be obtained from a dermatologist. The best way to deal with this is by using creams to help improve skin texture, look for ingredients such as glycolic, or retinols. In addition, doctors can prescribe creams with retinol, or hydroquinone to lighten dark spots. Acne treatments designed to dry the skin should be used with caution, because they can also cause dark spots. Acne medications that can have a drying effect on the skin, such as benzoyl may irritate the skin and prolong post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation in some cases. Benzoyl peroxide can also lighten skin. For better results retinol, Retin-a is better for Indian skin.

Blackheads
Blackheads are generally formed when dirt, sebum and dead skin clog a pore. The outward appearance can have the look of tiny pore-sized dark spots. The best way to treat blackheads is to prevent them with a good skin care regimen consisting of an oil-absorbing cleanser and astringent containing salicylic acid. And using products with glycolic acid, salicylic acid, AHAs or retinol will help prevent oil and sebum accumulation.

Whiteheads
These are different from blackheads. Whiteheads are defined as tiny, white, raised spots wherein skin cells clog and close a hair follicle. Whiteheads are not pimples even though they both look alike. But whiteheads should never be attempted to be removed alone at home. If you try to squeeze the whitehead you may easily break the skin. To prevent whiteheads from forming, begin with proper skin care. Just like with blackheads, wash with a facial cleanser twice daily and use products with glycolic acid, salicylic acid, AHAs or retinol.
Step 1: Cleanse the face thoroughly with a good cleanser meant for oily skin, preferably using ingredients with glycolic acid or salicylic acid. Stay away from creamy or oil based cleansers.
Step 2: Apply an astringent. Especially one that contains salicylic acid and/or glycolic acid. It helps reduce oiliness.
Step 3: Apply a good quality cream or gel containing retinol, salicylic acid or benzoyl peroxide. This helps prevent oil build up and also helps with exfoliation. You can get creams or gels of benzoyl peroxide. If benzoyl peroxide leaves your skin dry, you can avoid this step.

Blackheads and whiteheads are treated over time with proper skin care. Never attempt to pick them at home, because this can cause scarring and result in dark spots.

Did you know your make up could look even better today with just a few simple tricks?

Celebrity make-up artist Mary Beth York says an extra few minutes in the morning, and the right products, can make a huge difference.

Your makeup can still have the same freshness and radiance in the morning and at 5 p.m.

Here are 4 of secrets to youthful, beautiful skin:

1. Foundation, foundation!
York says that most women wear the wrong foundation color.

The problem is, even when we spend big bucks at the department stores, those harsh lights can bring out the reds or yellows of our face and we end up buying the wrong color of foundation.

You need toner in your foundation to even out the pinks and yellows of your skin.

A custom blend helps you get the perfect look if you are 'in between' those basic shades available.

If you have the right foundation, you can wear less eye makeup or get creative with the shades.

You can also wear more foundation (which means better coverage!) and still look natural. The unnatural look comes with the wrong color of foundation.

2. Kissable lips
Use a concealer stick around and on your lips. This smooths out any age lines/wrinles and helps prime your lips.

Ever notice your lipstick 'turning colors' when you put it on? Don't go without lip primer.

This will help keep your color from changing colors and help it last longer.

3. Lovely lashes
Think curling iron... for your eyelashes. Just turn it on and let it heat up and apply it to your eyelashes over your mascara.

4. Perfect pores
To smooth those pores and fill in lines/wrinkles on your face, try a pore or face primer.

Boots cream

Miracle? Boots No 7's new serum has been proven by scientists to reduce the appearance of wrinkles

Two years ago, Boots produced a wrinkle cream so effective that stores sold out in a day.

On Thursday, when its latest product hits the shelves, the high street chemist sets out to show customers it has done it again.

Aimed at mature skin with more wrinkles than its sister lotion, No7 Protect & Perfect Intense Beauty Serum is said to be twice as good as normal moisturisers at plumping up the skin and smoothing away wrinkles.

And Boots is offering proof. A year-long study at Manchester University found that 70 per cent of those who used the £19.75 cream for a year had fewer, finer lines, the British Journal of Dermatology reported.

The study was one of the first to put an off-the-shelf beauty cream through the rigorous testing usually applied to new medicines. Professor Chris Griffiths, who conducted the research, said: 'If someone has wrinkles, they are going to respond as well to it if they are 45 or 80.'

Dr Nick Lowe, a consultant dermatologist and clinical professor of dermatology, said the study appeared to confirm that the anti-wrinkle cream rejuvenated the skin.

The secret is thought to lie in a cocktail of vitamins, proteins and plant extracts which act together to boost production of fibrillin, a protein which makes ageing and sun-damaged skin more elastic.

It includes vitamin A and extract of lupin. And while the original Protect & Perfect Serum and the new cream share some ingredients, there are crucial differences. The original cream uses 'pentapeptides' - groups of five amino acids - to trigger the rejuvenation of skin.

The Intense version, which has actually been on sale for 18 months under the name Refine and Rewind (but without the backing of the research), has pairs of peptides and extracts of alfalfa. Boots scientists say the combination gives it a stronger and quicker effect.

Professor Griffiths, who was funded by the chemist but designed the experiments independently, said: 'You could say Boots was very confident or very foolhardy but they were willing to go with it which was impressive to us.'

Stewart Long, the firm's skincare scientific advisor, said that it was likely other anti-ageing creams contained similar ingredients - but only Boots had been brave enough to put it to the test.

Queues for Boots No 7 PROTECT & PERFECT SKIN CREAM

Following last year's report on BBC's Horizons that the Boots serum actually did help regenerate the skin's elasticity, the cream sold out in minutes and queues formed with customers vying for pots. Sales soared to two every ten seconds

'Consumers purchasing cosmetic skincare products can choose from a variety of products, which have only limited published data regarding their efficacy.

'We feel we have answered our customers and the market proving that Boots No7 products really can help to improve skin's appearance.

'This study sets the bar for all beauty companies to test their products as rigorously as possible and make the results public.'

Two years ago, 20 weeks' supply of Boots Protect & Perfect Beauty Serum sold out in a day after BBC2's Horizon featured a study which revealed it could make the skin look younger.

But Professor Griffiths said: 'Most wrinkles are down to sun exposure and not to age. The best thing you can do to prevent wrinkles is to practise sensible sun advice and use sun screens.'

Not only does it smell sublime, but rose oil heals, hydrates, moisturises and softens

skin of all ages

Rose petals

Now imagine a light oil that rehydrates, regenerates and revitalises winter weary skin. It’s anti-ageing, smoothing, brightening and boasts every fashionable vitamin going. So far, so high-tech.

The smell, however, will transport you right back to your granny’s dressing table because this spring’s magic ingredient is derived from roses - and it’s chemical and toxin free.

Now here’s a quick history lesson. It’s only since the 19th century that the fragrant rose has become best known for its use in perfumery.

Before that, roses were grown mainly for their medicinal properties. The Persians are credited with being the first to separate the essential oils from the petals by floating the flowers in water and waiting for the sun to do its work.

‘With all the high-tech products on the market, we forget about the natural remedies of the Ancient Greeks and Romans,’ says Lynne Sanders, who runs Cosmetics A La Carte with her colleague Christina Stewart.

‘However, we are beginning to revisit natural ingredients such as roses and finding the most wonderful benefits to our skin.’

Lynne is rightly proud of her foray into the annals of history. The result is a selection of divine new products including Rose Elixir (£35, 15ml).

This is a potent mix of rose absolute (a liquid extraction from fresh blossoms) and rose hip oil.

Rose hips are the fruit of the wild rose, or Rosa canina, and they have an incredibly high vitamin C content - eight times the amount, weight for weight, that you get from oranges.

No wonder wild rose hips were gathered during World War II, when citrus fruits were scarce, and made into a syrup for children.

Lynne and her team have created more of a skin drink, which you apply at night.

‘Rose absolute has been proven to help repair broken capillaries and calm redness. It is also an excellent tissue hydrator,’ she says.

That aside, the aroma is uplifting. ‘Rose Absolute is believed to help reduce anxiety, promote feelings of well-being and is useful in helping to cope with depression or stress,’ says Lynne.

Rose oil is also a key ingredient at Neal’s Yard Remedies. The rose body cream is unctuous and the rose shampoo and conditioner are extra moisturising and smell lovely.

The queen of all rose oils is rose otto - extracted from the species Rosa Damascena.Morocco is one of the few places that can grow this flower in large enough quantities to produce the oil - it takes an incredible 2,000 roses to create just one gram of the wonderful stuff.

Eco-Friendly Beauty Tips

The cosmetics industry is a multi-billion dollar industry, making it apparent that women (and men too!) are very self-conscious of their physical appearance. But the truth is that most of us have never given thought to how our daily beauty regimen may be affecting the environment or our bodies. Although the bathroom is often considered a sanctuary for some, it may be exposing you to more dangers than you’re even aware of! Now you can learn how to turn your bathroom into the perfect safe-haven by incorporating these simple tips for a more green beauty routine:

Roses Are Red - Enjoy Their Benefits

1. Conserve Water

About 75% of the planet’s surface is covered with water but only 1% is available for the human population. Needless to say, it is important for everyone to conserve as much water as possible – especially in the bathroom, where 70% of our water consumption occurs. Conserve water by limiting your shower time and turning off the water while brushing your teeth. Not only will you save a few extra dollars on your water utility bill, you’ll be saving gallons worth of water too (A four-minute shower uses approximately 20 to 40 gallons of water!) In addition, you may want to consider investing in a low-flow shower head which will cost you only $10.

2. Save Energy

Instead of using ordinary light bulbs in the bathroom, switch to compact fluorescent light bulbs. According to the Union of Concerned Scientists, if every U.S. household replaced just one regular incandescent light bulb with a compact fluorescent light bulb, it would prevent 90 billion pounds of greenhouse gas emissions from power plants, the equivalent of taking 7.5 million cars off the road. Not only do compact fluorescent light bulbs use approximately 75 to 80 percent less electricity, they last up to ten times longer than incandescent bulbs

3. Avoid Disposables

Did you know that 2 billion disposable razors end up in U.S. landfills each year? To minimize the impact on the environment, use reusable and refillable razors rather than plastic disposable razors which are non-biodegradable. Using a reusable razor rather than disposable ones turns out to be cheaper in the long run and provides less clutter in the bathroom. In addition, when applying makeup, use your fingers and/or brushes rather than disposable sponges and q-tips. Many makeup artists prefer to use their fingers for blending in foundation, cream eyeshadow, and even lipgloss because they can reach tiny places with ease and they provide a smooth looking finish. Word of warning: make sure your fingers are clean before touching your face!

4. Recycle makeup containers

Instead of just tossing that empty plastic compact into the trash, inquire and take part in a makeup recycling program. MAC has a “Back to MAC” recycling program which allows you to trade in six MAC containers for a free lipstick of your choice. These aren’t cheap lipsticks either ladies – each lipstick normally sells for $14, so all the more incentive to recycle! You can also contact your local drug store, beauty store, or recycling center to see if they accept any empty makeup containers.

5. Cruelty-Free Cosmetics

Every year, cosmetics companies kill millions of animals to test their products. However, the FDA does not require animal testing for cosmetics, and alternative testing methods are widely available. Support brands such as Avon, The Body Shop, and Mary Kay, who use humane non-animal testing methods to ensure the safety of their cosmetics. Click here http://search.caringconsumer.com/ to find a complete list of companies that do and do not test on animals. In addition, look out for the Leaping Bunny Logo on the packaging of your cosmetics. This is the only internationally recognized logo that guarantees no animal tests were used in the development of the product.

6. Beware of Toxins

Our skin is extremely permeable and many of the products we use on our skin are absorbed and deposited into the circulatory system. Since makeup products are not always tested for safety, some may contain extremely toxic ingredients that may be harmful to your body. Beware of the following three chemicals:

Parabens: This preservative can be found in shampoos, commercial moisturizers, shaving gels, cleansing gels and personal lubricants. Parabens are rapidly absorbed, but a certain amount of parabens remains stored in human body and has been linked to breast cancer and hormone disruption.

Talc: Talc is found in many pressed powders, and even in some eye shadows and foundations. Studies show talc to be similar in structure to asbestos and can increase the risk of ovarian cancer.

Phthalates: These chemicals are found in most hair sprays, deodorants, nail polishes and perfumes, and are believed to cause damage to the endocrine and reproductive system. Phthalates are banned in Europe, but not in the U.S. or Canada.

To ensure your cosmetics are non-toxic, you can check out http://www.cosmeticsdatabase.com and search by product, company, or ingredient.

7. Try Organic Makeup

Avoid feeding your body harmful chemicals by switching to organic, natural companies that create beauty products made from minerals, plant oils and flower extracts. Suki Pure Skin Care, Dr. Hauschka, and Juice Beauty are a few companies who have developed an all-natural line free of synthetics and petrochemicals. I, myself, have recently started using Bare Escentuals’ line of mineral makeup and noticed my skin looking clearer and more radiant. Since organic cosmetics do not contain any synthetic ingredients, they are less likely to cause acne, irritation, or blackheads.

AnticaFarmacista_main.jpgAntica Farmacista makes some of the prettiest smelling (and looking!) home fragrances around. In fact, their clean, fresh Santorini scent won Allure's Best of Beauty award last year. Now, they've taken it to the next level, by bringing some of those favorite scents to bath and body products. (For the person who's always wished they could smell like their living room...and we totally put ourselves in that category, by the way.) The fragrances have been poured into hand washes, body washes, and lotions—all with bathroom-safe plastic packaging we swear is a dead-ringer for beveled glass. They all smell pretty delish, so you might want to avoid the olfactory overload by checking out our favorites first: juicy Orange Blossom; crisp Acqua; and, of course, Santorini.

Not only does she grace the cover of Vogue India May 2009 but model Lakshmi also has a spread devoted to her hometown of Goa in the May 2009 US edition of Vogue. While I’m loving the India cover, I am coveting the US spread especially the beautiful shots of Goa and its culture. Lakshmi also happens to live in Goa, full-time, with her boyfriend. Very cool in my opinion that although being a world-renowned supermodel, she hasn’t shifted herself to the US or elsewhere and stays true to her roots.

when it comes to fashion: you have to look good with the colors that
