We went backstage at this week’s Dressed to Kilt charity fashion show to scope out the hair and makeup, and aside from being slightly preoccupied with certain shortsighted personal wardrobe choices (stripes instead of plaid? Come on!), most of our attention was directed due left of the Scotch-stocked bar, where the traditional makeup station was curiously devoid of brushes, sponges, and wands. Instead, tables were strewn with liquid foundations, liquid blush, and liquid highlighters, which were being loaded into handheld devices and sprayed onto celebrities’ and models’ bodies and faces by a team of professionals from Temptu cosmetics. “It just gives the most natural finish,” lead artist JP McCary said of the high-definition method, as he softly applied a pink blush to socialite Hayley Bloomingdale’s cheek. Often thought of as a Hollywood technique for special-effect use only, airbrushing is gaining ground in the fashion world and has designs on your cosmetics bag as well: The looks crafted backstage at Trovata and Devi Kroell’s Fall shows were both airbrushed creations courtesy of Temptu, and the brand is currently at work on a less cumbersome at-home application kit due out later this year. Getting a flawless finish might not be a feat exclusive to magazine art departments, after all.
