She's been hitting the headlines in the past few weeks with her harrowing story of her trouble childhood and sexual abuse.

But as Ashley Judd promoted her autobiography All That Is Bitter And Sweet in New York yesterday, it was her make-up rather than her book attracting the most attention.

The Double Jeopardy actress, 42, appears to have suffered a beauty blunder with too much loose powder all over her face.

Under the bright lights at a book signing at a Manhattan branch of Barnes & Nobles, it unfortunately looked like she had been in a flour fight due to the unblended powder across her nose and cheeks.

In her memoir, Judd talks about her unusual childhood growing up in a famous family.

Her mother is the country legend Naomi Judd, while her elder half-sister Wynonna is also a country singer.

While her mother and sister have spoken about the 'fun' childhood, Ashley remembers growing up somewhat differently.

She writes in the book: 'She and my sister have been quoted as saying that our family put the 'fun' in dysfunction. I wondered: "Who, exactly, was having all the fun? What was I missing?"

'I was taught to believe that our lifestyle was normal and never to question it or complain, even when I was left alone for hours, sometimes days at a time, or when I was passed without warning to yet another relative.

'There was always marijuana inside the house.'

In the book, Ashley recalls being raped aged just 15 when she was modelling in Japan.

She recalled: 'There was a creepy Frenchman who hung out at the bar ... He offered me a ride home ... I was so young and confused that I had no idea that what followed was rape.'

As a result of her experiences, Ashley suffered depression and even considered suicide so checked into rehab in 2006.

Ashley Judd is an inspiration to a generation of young women, and as an image consultant we have no trouble recommending that clients follow in her example. No one is perfect, but she comes close.
